Trying to read the bible and understand it in the "Here and Now" is the most natural impulse I have and I find I need to stop myself and read and re-read it. I need to try and place it in its context. To not input my own understanding into what ti is saying. It is like when we travel. We know there are different customs, different ways of thinking, different cultural norms. And, when we are in those places we don't simply try and force our way thinking upon it. We seek to understand it and "translate" it so we can engage it in a more fulfilling and honest way. Just my thoughts.

I am always struck by how easy it can be to mis-use the bible. How we can approach it too casually or even too strictly. The challenge to prepare ourselves before we begin is an important thing and for us to let go of our own perspectives and ideas before we begin to exegete the text. Asking What's the point is also such a great reminder.

I really love that God used people to write the bible and it gives me an understanding that he continues to work through me as well (but not in writing scripture obviously). It also reminds me that just as I need to get to know another person in order to understand who they are, I need to study and read the bible in order to know more of who God is. As we wrestle with his word and seek to understand its context, its intention, and its meaning, we are shown more of who God is, what we calls us to and how we live in this world he has made.

For me, I have thought of myself as an interpreter when reading the bible, and I try to force myself to acknowledge my predispositions, biases,etc. But I can honestly say that I am often moved by my own interests and "soap boxes" when I read the bible and I try to lay those down every time I read. Anytime time I find myself reading a passage and then thinking about someone who needs to "hear this" I remind myself that I need to listen to myself and take seriously what it is directing me to do in my life. I have been using the NET bible a lot as I like to see notes on various passages but I always try to read in 2-3 different versions to get a broader feel for what it is saying.

I like how the authors are committed to reviewing and revising their work. Just like we need to continually come back to the bible and re-read, reinterpret and allow it speak in new ways.

So I thought I would kick this off. Hopefully we can learn more about each other and build on the relationships we have here. So I am Chris, and I live in Grande Prairie. I currently work at the church as the online person. I am very much interested in music, photography and writing. I have a wife and 3 sons as well as a dog who keep us busy.
